  • What to expect when your child is admitted in our PICU??

Children admitted to PICU are often more critical than those in the other wards, however, this may not always be true and the admission to PICU can be strictly for better monitoring and extra care. You will be required to periodically take an update from your treating consultant and take extra precautions to ensure hygiene & cleanliness when you handle the child.

How to secure period updates on the health of the child?

Your treatment consultant will provide you with regular and timely updates on the condition of your child. You may speak to the senior doctors on the progress or future course of treatment.

How long will by child have to stay in PICU?

If your child underwent a major surgery it will be cared for in the PICU for several days depending on how well it is recovering. After a surgery the child may be cared for in the Hospital’s medical – surgical floors and might be transferred to PICU only if required. How long the children stay in the PICU largely depends on their condition – some might stay for a single day while others might need longer duration of care in PICU. We always encourage you to ask the attending PICU Specialist or Nurse caring for your child if you have any questions about the child’s condition, treatment procedure, how it is recovering, about discharge procedure and formalities, post-discharge care and follow up health check-ups.

What should you or your child expect while being in the PICU?

Your child will find itself surrounded by various medical equipments that are attached to it. This includes

    • IV (Intravenous Catheter)- For administering fluids and medications. An IV is a thin, flexible tube inserted into the vein of feet, leg, hands or arms, with the help of small needle. Some situation might require greater volumes of fluids and medication and these would require insertion of a central line which is larger IVs that are inserted into the larger and more central veins of the chest, neck or groin.
    • Medications
    • Monitors - Your child many be attached to machines that monitors it heart rate and breathing rate.
    • Tests – Your child’s doctor might order for several tests that helps him evaluate and monitor your child’s condition and plan the course of treatment accordingly. This could be in the form of blood tests, urine tests, X-rays, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography or CT scans, MRI, etc.
    • Oxygen Masks & Ventilators - Your child might require extra assistance to breathe and hence the doctor might suggest the use of oxygen mask on the face or tubing in the nose. But in some situations, your child would be needed to be connected to the ventilator. This is done via a plastic tube placed into the windpipe through the mouse or nose.

Who takes care of my child in the PICU?

Your child will be cared by a Pediatric Intensivist who underwent a fellowhowship training in Intensive care after his medical school and residency. Your child will also be attended by specialists which includes Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, Nutritionists, Neurologists, Pulmonologists, Oncologist, Gastroenterologists, Heaptologists, etc depending upon for what condition it is being treated for.
