Fetal Medicine

Fetal Medicine

The majority of pregnancies progress without complications, but there are instances where either the mother or her unborn baby may require specialized care for various reasons. Specialized care in fetal medicine becomes essential when the unborn baby presents abnormalities such as gastroschisis, or when the mother's medical conditions elevate the risk to the baby, as in the case of red cell antibodies or viral infections.

At BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals, the well-being of your child commences even before birth. In addition to conducting routine fetal checks for all expectant mothers, we offer advanced fetal diagnostic and therapeutic services, encompassing various treatments. Our team includes highly experienced and renowned fetal medicine consultants and specialists, collaborating with other experts like Neonatologists, Geneticists, Pediatric Surgeons, Fetal Cardiologists, and Neurosurgeons within our multidisciplinary approach. Fetal intervention is recommended to ensure an early diagnosis of any potential issues or concerns. The fetal medicine department strives to provide the optimal health status for the baby while still in the womb.

Immediately after the birth of your baby, our newborn specialists will be present in the delivery room for the examination of your baby. Factors like the baby’s colour will be examined. If the baby has breathing troubles, an endotracheal tube will be placed in the airway to help the baby breathe. An intravenous line will be required if the baby cannot take breast milk or formula, for preventing dehydration. Our team will provide you with necessary updates throughout the process. Our fetal medicine specialists will assess the situation and then run a course of treatment to ensure that you and your baby are safe, healthy and out of danger. Can the baby be breastfed?

Yes, breast feeding is always encouraged. The antibodies and nutrients in breast milk help with the growth and development of newborns. You may need to pump your breast milk and store it in the freezer before it is time for the baby to take the milk.

What are the next steps?

Your doctor will closely observe your pregnancy and will have a detailed plan for the same. You can always consult with our maternal-fetal medicine specialist regarding your concerns and questions. The maternal fetal specialist assigned to you will guide you on the further steps.

Will it affect future pregnancies?

Before you conceive again, it is advisable to consult with a maternal-fetal medicine doctor, geneticist or obstetrician. They will help determine any risk for future pregnancy and provide necessary recommendations as well.

How to take care of yourself?

You must make sure you follow all the recommendations from your doctor. Have a healthy diet, take your prenatal vitamins and get sufficient rest. It is important to avoid smoking and alcohol during pregnancy.

How long will the baby be in the hospital?

The length of hospital stay varies depending on the individual stay. The pediatric specialist will decide based on the diagnosis and the baby’s condition. The doctors can only provide you with a general idea as each case is different. The stay may be longer or shorter. The maternal fetal specialist assigned to you will be there with you to take care of your baby.
