In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most effective, commonly performed and final infertility treatment in the world. IVF treatment creates the optimal conditions required to give eggs and sperm the highest chance of getting together to create a pregnancy. In vitro fertilization (IVF) helps overcome certain conditions in both the male and female reproductive systems that cause infertility. “In vitro” is Latin for “in glass,” meaning fertilization occurs in a glass container in the lab.

Although IVF is not a cure-all for infertility and may not be right for every patient, it provides the best fertility treatment success rate for many couples and individuals experiencing infertility.

FAQs
Which is the best center for IVF treatment?

BirthRight Fertility by Rainbow Hospitals offers the best IVF treatments in India and is known to have a proven record of consistently delivering high success rates for infertility treatments.

What is IVF?

IVF or in vitro fertilization is the most common type of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology). The process bypasses some infertility causes like male sperm abnormality and irregularity of ovulation or fallopian tube in females to create an embryo. The IVF process basically involves the woman’s egg being retrieved surgically and being mixed with the donor or male partner’s sperm in a laboratory for the fertilization to take place. The embryo or the fertilized egg is allowed to grow for 2-5 days before it is transferred back to the womb of the woman.

Is IVF treatment painful?

IVF is a safe treatment for infertility and is the ideal method for helping couples with infertility problems conceive. Though there may be a few mild symptoms of cramping, bloating, etc after the procedure, most women do not experience any pain during IVF and it is completely safe. BirthRight Fertility by Rainbow Hospitals provides the best IVF treatments in India with multiple fertility centers established in cities like - Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Vizag, Vijayawada, and many more coming up.

Success Rate & Cost of In Vitro Fertilization:

Generally, if you have been trying to get pregnant for a year or more but have been unsuccessful in doing so, we recommend you consult with our fertility specialists. In any given month, there is a 20% chance that a fertile couple will be able to conceive a child. As a result, around 90% of couples within a year of trying to get pregnant.

For the remaining 10% of couples, we advise you to consult our fertility experts. In cases of women over the age of 35, fertility treatment evaluation is recommended after failure of conceiving after 6 months of attempt. For women over 40, you should meet our fertility doctor as soon as you decide to try having a child.

Who are the candidates for IVF?

To determine whether IVF is a suitable treatment for a patient or not, several factors come into play. Following are the factors that might make you an appropriate candidate for the treatment:

Low sperm counts
Problems with the fallopian tubes or uterus
Endometriosis
Sperm unable to survive in the cervical mucus or penetrate
Ovulation disorders
Other health issues or unexplained infertility

What is the success rate of IVF?

Thanks to the best IVF doctor in India available at the BirthRight Fertility by Rainbow, we have an incredible success rate with IVF treatment. When the woman is using her own eggs, the IVF success rate starts dropping around the age of 30 and continues to dip as she grows older because of the reduced quality and quantity of eggs. Apart from age, the IVF success rate also varies based on factors like weight, height, sperm count, and infertility diagnosis. Previous reproductive history like the number of previous pregnancies, births and miscarriages also determine its success

What do I need to avoid while undergoing IVF?

There are a few restrictions that apply when a patient is undergoing IVF or In Vitro Fertilization. Our doctors will detail you regarding these restrictions beforehand.

Smoking: It is advisable for both partners to stop smoking at least 3 months before an IVF cycle begins, and before ovulation induction takes place. Tobacco is known to have harmful and toxic effects on the eggs of a woman.

Drinking: You need to avoid alcohol from the very beginning of the IVF treatment. If the pregnancy test shows you are pregnant, you should avoid alcohol until you give birth.

Medication: You should inform your doctor regarding any over the counter or prescription medication you might be taking. Certain medications may interfere with fertility medication or may not be safe for surgery and embryo transfer.

Vigorous work out: During ovarian stimulation, until the IVF pregnancy results are known, intense physical activities like weightlifting should be prohibited.

How long does the procedure take?

The IVF or In Vitro Fertilization process takes around 4-6 weeks before the egg is retrieved. Then, the embryos are implanted after 2-5 days. Patients may not achieve pregnancy in the first IVF cycle itself. IN fact, a lot of patients commonly require multiple IVF cycles before they get pregnant.

How the IVF Process Works?

One IVF cycle nearly takes four weeks to complete. A pregnancy test is performed after about two weeks of the embryo being placed in the uterus. Prior to the commencement of the IVF cycle, a basic health check is mandatory. This assessment generally included pelvic ultrasound, hormonal assay, uterine cavity assessment (SHG/Hysteroscopy), catheter trial, laparoscopy (if required), and semen culture and analysis.

The stimulation protocol is planned according to the age of the woman, hormonal profile, and ovarian reserve.

Here’s a look at the steps involved in the treatment process.

Step 1: Stimulation Phase: Depending on the protocol planned, the stimulation of the ovaries commences on day 2 of the menstrual cycle. This phase usually lasts for 12-14 days, during which hormonal injections are administered daily. The hormone increases the number of eggs produced by the woman so that more is available for fertilization. During this phase, hormonal tests and monitoring through ultrasound are done. Once the lead follicles reach the appropriate size, oocyte maturation injection, i.e., HCG is administered.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval: Once the HCG injection is given, the oocyte retrieval is done at 35hrs from the HCG injection. This procedure is done vaginally under sedation and requires hospitalization for at least half a day. The woman is usually advised rest and the help of pain killers for a day after this procedure.

Step 3: The male partner’s Procedure: Simultaneously with egg retrieval, the male partner’s semen sample is taken for processing.

Step 4: The Fertilization Procedure: The retrieved eggs or oocytes are mixed with the sperms extracted from the semen sample in safe laboratory conditions. This mixture is kept within an incubator to facilitate fertilization.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer: Between the third and fifth day after egg retrieval, the embryos are checked for fertilization and cleavage and then transferred into the woman’s uterus via the cervix. The remaining embryos are frozen or cryopreserved for future.

A pregnancy test is performed 15 days after the embryo transfer. During this period, the woman is advised to continue with her regular daily activities, although the strenuous activity is best avoided during this period.
