FAQs
What is pelvic organ prolapse?
When one or more organs of a woman in the pelvic area drop from its usual position, it pushes against the vaginal walls. This condition is called pelvic organ prolapse. It occurs when the strength of the ligaments and muscles supporting the pelvic organs is less than the downward pressure of the organs. When pelvic organ prolapses, fullness may be experienced in the vagina. The tissues may even protrude from the vagina if the prolapse continues to increase.
What causes pelvic floor disorders and incontinence?
There are several things that might cause pelvic floor disorders and fecal and urinary incontinence, including damage harming the pelvic floor muscles, supporting tissues or nerves, genetics and childbirth. Obesity and smoking can also be a contributing factor to urinary incontinence. Aging, chronic diseases, repeated heavy lifting, genetics or surgery can also cause pelvic floor disorders.
Can I do anything on my own about incontinence?
There are a lot of things that can be done for treating incontinence, depending on your individual situation. Performing kegel exercises or pelvic floor muscle exercises can help strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which may improve bladder control and possibly even prevent the occurrence of pelvic floor disorders. There will be less stress on bowels if you consume foods with high fiber content. Similarly, your bladder control is likely to increase if you avoid caffeine and other such beverages. You can also try bladder training through behavior modification to help control the timing of urination. You can reduce risks of pelvic floor disorders if you maintain proper weight, avoid excessive stress in lifting and avoid smoking. Further, the best urogynecology doctors can guide you as to what you can do on your own.
I feel embarrassed talking about my bladder control troubles. What should I do?
It can definitely be embarrassing to talk about your loss of bowel control or bladder control. However, you shouldn’t be embarrassed talking about your condition to our urogynecologist. The urogynecologist at BirthRight by Rainbow Hospital are skilled and trained professionals who are compassionate when they talk to women about problems like these. What you want is exactly what they want as well: to relieve your incontinence troubles or eliminate them completely. There is no reason why women should tolerate a problem like urinary incontinence. Still, a lot of women suffer in silence without seeking medical attention that could improve their quality of life to a great extent. You need to know that a lot of these conditions are actually treatable and curable. The first step you have to take is to talk to our urogynecologist. We have the best urogynecology doctors, who will help you deal with your issue without any judgement.
Is it possible that my pelvic floor problem will simply go away on its own?
It isn’t a likely scenario for pelvic floor disorder to go away over time. In certain cases, our urogynecologist may suggest doing nothing for observing the situation over time, provided the symptoms aren’t too severe for the patient. Pelvic floor disorder and incontinence may get worse as well if the condition is left untreated. As a result, a problem that might have needed a simpler treatment previously could end up needing a more complex treatment eventually. Our urogynecologist at BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals can diagnose your issue according to the symptoms and can suggest a course of treatment to help you.
