Aug 28, 2023
Flu is the word used to describe the respiratory diseases caused by various groups of viruses. Common viruses which cause flu are influenza virus, parainfluenza viruses, Adenovirus, RSV etc. Flu is very common in school going children, it spreads from one person to another by contact, droplet or aerosol methods. Commonly flu manifests as running nose high-grade fever, cough, eyes-redness, headache and body bodyache. Usually, it takes about 3 to 5 days for the child to recover from the Flu. Sometimes it can lead to complications such as viral pneumonia or bronchiolitis, where the child can have fast breathing, low saturations, drowsiness, poor intake, may require hospital admission and sometimes ICU care. Management of children with flu includes using paracetamol for fever, steam inhalation, rest, avoiding sending them to school, good hydration and nutritious food. If a child goes to school with Flu, he/she may infect other kids or he/she may get secondary viral or bacterial infection, so it is highly recommended to avoid schooling during flu. It is also important to monitor for complications like if the child is not accepting orally, having fast breathing and drowsiness it is better to go to nearby hospital and consult a pediatrician. It is always said that prevention is better than cure, so what are all the preventive steps we need to take against Flu? First avoid sending to school when a child is having the Flu. Secondly, maintain good hand hygiene and wear a mask like in the Covid time. Thirdly, using appropriate medication during illness, avoid self-medication and self-antibiotic usage.
