Deworming – Things you need to know

Children are often exposed to worms and parasites like tapeworm, hookworm, whipworm and roundworm. Walking barefoot, playing in contaminated soil, eating undercooked meat or consuming unclean food and water can cause a worm infestation in children below 18 years of age. These parasites deprive the children of nutrition causing them to be malnourished. The worms can also cause intestinal bleeding, leading to anemia. The common symptoms of worms in the body are weight loss, stomach pain, loss of appetite, rashes on the body, especially on the buttocks, frequent urination and fatigue. What’s the way out? Deworming and how it works To keep your child healthy and worm free, Deworming is an effective way. It is a process where medicines are used to remove the worms from the body. To deworm, children are given a medicine that paralyses the worms, causing them to lose their grip in the intestine. The worms are then excreted from the body with passing motion. These medicines for deworming are completely safe and have very few side effects. WHO recommends that annual or biannual deworming be done regularly in children below the age of 18, especially in areas where the baseline prevalence of worm infection is more than 20%. Periodic deworming on a large scale has the potential to help bring down chances of further spread and infection among children. Prevention is better than cure It is also important that parents educate their children about hand hygiene and the importance of washing their hands often, especially after using the toilet. Children must be provided food that is well cooked and they must drink clean and filtered water. This will keep the chances of exposure to worms at bay. Take all precautions to prevent worm infections, if your child gets infected, immediately consult a paediatrician and ensure your child’s health and happiness, always!
