Expansion of Rainbow Vijaywada to a 150 bedded mother and child super specialty hospital (Month required)

After five years of successful clinical services at Vijayawada, the hospital expanded into a brand new 150 bed center, the largest and one-of-its kind facility in the tier II city. It is in fact much larger than our Hyderabad center. The center has a 40 bed, Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Facility. Also, after running Pediatric Intensive Care Services in Vijayawada for 5 years, we have realized the need for these services are increasing at an alarming rate; given the frequent occurrence of certain seasonal epidemic infections and diseases. To cater to this needs, we set up an Advanced Tertiary Multi-disciplinary Intensive Care Unit to support critically ill children. We are also proud to be the only private hospital entirely dedicated to women and children health care in this city. We care for the mother and the baby from conception, right through post natal support. Our advanced Perinatal Unit includes High risk Obstetrics, Fetal Medicine, Maternal Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Ranked amongst Top 5 best Children's Hospital in the country by "The Week" and "HANSA Research"

This was a third consecutive year win for Rainbow Hospitals which was ranked once again by ‘The Week’ and ‘HANSA Research’ as one of the top 5 best children’s hospital in the country for the year 2012. The survey criteria, evaluations and selection process got more rigorous in 2012. The survey was conducted in 16 cities this year. All hospitals with a minimum of 100 beds, which have completed at least 2 years of being operational, and which have received 5% or more of the nominations from physicians, radiologists and pathologists were considered. Until last year, rankings were based solely on a reputational survey conducted among health care experts. But this year’s survey has taken factual data into account in the rankings. A primary survey was conducted among 917 experts who included general physicians, specialists, pathologists and radiologists. A questionnaire was given to the experts asking them to nominate and rate the tip five multi-specialty hospitals in Indian and within their city. The following parameters were used for rankings: overall reputation of the hospital, competency of doctors, infrastructure, and availability of multiple specialties, patient care, hospital environment and innovation in treatment. For multi specialty hospitals in India, ranking was based on a composite score derived by combining the perceptual and factual score of the hospitals. Perceptual score for a hospital was calculated on the basis of the number of nominations received, actual rank given and ratings given to the hospital on the seven parameters mentioned above. The components used to compute the factual score and their weights included, age of the hospital, accreditations and associations with teaching institutes, number of full time doctors, doctors – to – bed ratio, number of nursing staff, number of beds, operation theatres and other patient services, number of in-patient admissions, OPD and surgeries done.

Expansion to Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh

After 7 years of practicing successful Pediatric and Women care at Hyderabad and having positioned ourselves as leaders in Tertiary Pediatric Care in the country, we felt a compelling need and responsibility to develop similar facilities in Tier-II cities in India. As a first step, we identified Vijayawada and thought it would serve as an ideal location for our foray into tier II cities. Vijayawada is in the heart of Andhra Pradesh and covers 40% of the state’s population, given its proximity to 5 surrounding districts. Rainbow Hospitals opened a 50 bedded Pediatric Tertiary Care and Perinatal Center in Vijayawada supported by all allied services. With Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Surgery and more, it is one of the most comprehensive Pediatric Care Centers.

Laying foundation for the future

The first few years since inception was a period of laying solid roots and foundation to achieve the vision of becoming trusted leaders in Children and Women Healthcare, providing all round, affordable, accessible and quality care for patients in need. Rainbow Hospitals started small and simple in 1999 as a hospital focusing primarily on pediatrics for children. The staff’s mission was to provide the best medical care possible and they stood united in their promise to put their patients at the heart of all they did. And, as they delivered this promise, word spread, about the dedicated, effective care provided in the hospital, just one of the few pediatric hospitals in Hyderabad at that time. And over the next two years Rainbow prepared itself to expand and launch multiple super specialty units across the city and outside. The year 2007 was a landmark in the history of Rainbow’s growth as we expanded its first center, opened another one within the city and also ventured into tier 2 city.

The Rainbow Journey began

Rewinding back to 1999: It all really started a year before that, in London, 1998. When a young Indian Pediatrician and a super specialist had the opportunity to take on a consultant’s role and stay back in the United Kingdom with an additional option to migrate to the US in a similar capacity. He chose to do something remarkable instead – he chose to turn down a future of assured professional growth and returned to India with a vision... an idea that was going to change the face of tertiary Pediatric care in South India forever. Back in those days, Pediatric care facilities, especially high end neonatal tertiary care facilities were sparse and only a few major cities could claim ownership of standalone Children’s Hospitals. Typically, Pediatric emergency cases were handled by a hospital’s emergency unit for want of a NICU or even a PICU and often resulted in a high percentage of sentinel events especially if babies were brought in a critical stage. Despite the scenario of Pediatric care prevalent at the time, when he conducted a small personal survey regarding the feasibility of his idea - starting a small Pediatric tertiary care unit in Hyderabad, it was largely met with doubt, scepticism and a friendly yet firm assurance that the city did not really need it, was not ready for it and that it would probably be a better personal choice for him to forget about it and go back and find his future in the west. This young man then did a second remarkable thing - he went ahead with his plan and on Children’s Day, November 14th, 1999, Rainbow Hospital opened its doors. The rest, as they say, is history.
