Dr. Mehul A. Shah, an American board certified Pediatric Nephrologist, is one of the handful pediatric nephrologist in India and the only one in the state of Andhra Pradesh.Dr. Shah had his medical graduate training from KEM hospital, Bombay and completed his post-graduation in Pediatrics from Wadia Children’s Hospital, Bombay in 1993. Subsequently, he went to USA for b-specialization and completed another 3 years of pediatric residency at University of Connecticut followed by a 4-year fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas & Southwestern Medical University at Dallas, Texas, USA. He obtained his American Board certification in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology before returning back to India to practice only pediatric nephrology.
Dr. Shah is an active full-time member of Rainbow Children’s Hospital group and provides care to neonates & children with kidney diseases. The out-patient services cater to children with nephritic & nephrotic syndrome, urinary tract infections, renal tubular disorders, hypertension and obstructive uropathy. He conducts a special out-patient clinic twice a month for newborns with antenatal detected renal anomalies, counsels the parents and plans the post-natal evaluation.
Dr. Shah has performed several kidney biopsies and acute peritoneal dialysis in neonates and children. His major interest is in children with renal tubulopathies, on which he has done his basic science research while in Dallas. Dr. Shah follows ~ 50 children with renal tubular disorders including dRTA (12 children), pRTA (20 children), type IV RTA (12 children), Bartter’s syndrome (8 children), Gitelman’s syndrome (1 patient), and diabetes insipidus (3 children). Besides clinical pediatric nephrology, he provides care to children with end stage kidney disease through chronic dialysis and renal transplantation. He has several children with end-stage renal disease on chronic hemodialysis as well as continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, awaiting kidney transplantation. So far, three children have successfully received renal transplant.
Dr. Shah is a member of International Society of Pediatric Nephrology, Indian Pediatric Nephrology Group, & Indian Academy of Pediatrics. He has several publications to his credit, both in national & international peer-reviewed journals (including Indian Pediatrics, American Society of Physiology, Pediatric Research, Pediatric Nephrology, JCI, etc) and also contributed chapters to textbook of pediatric nephrology. He is a Reviewer for Pediatric Nephrology, Indian Pediatrics, and Indian Journal of Practical Pediatrics. Dr. Shah is active in conducting CME programs and has participated in state and national conferences.
